Homemade Instant Pot Black Forest Cherry Pie Cake
While this is a variation on the traditional black forest cake from Germany, it’s still delicious to serve with some of your favorite German dishes.
We particularly enjoy serving it after making some yummy pork schnitzel, sauerkraut, and kartoffelpuffer pancakes (potato pancakes).

Ingredients to make the Black Forest Dump Cake
- 1 21 oz- cherry pie filling
- 1/2 box Chocolate cake mix
- 4 tbsp. butter, melted
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Non-stick baking spray
- Foil
- 1 cup water
- Trivet
Since this recipe uses pie filling and cake mix, you have so many options if you want to make a different version.
Equipment needed to make Black Forest Cherry Pie Dump Cake:
- 6 Qt. Instant Pot Duo
- Can Opener
- Mixing Bowls
- Measuring Cup
- Round Baking Dish or Springform Pan
- Trivet
- Foil
Note: You may use a round baking dish that fits inside of your Instant Pot or other pressure cooker. Many home cooks like to purchase a springform pan and other accessories so that they can really make the most of their pot.
How to make the Black Forest Dump Cake
Spray a round oven-safe baking dish with non-stick baking spray.
Add your can of pie filling to the dish.
Then add your cake mix and pour it evenly over the top of the pie filling.
Pour the butter on top.
Now sprinkle your chocolate chips over the cake mixture.
Pour your water into the inner part of your Instant Pot.
Place a trivet inside your Instant Pot.
Cover your baking dish with aluminum foil and place the baking dish on top of the trivet.
Put the lid on the instant pot, close and lock it, and turn the vent to Sealing position.
Select PRESSURE COOK high for 25 minutes.
Allow a 5 minute natural release.
A natural release is where you simply let the pot sit for the indicated time before manually releasing the pressure (quick release).
Turn the valve to do a quick release.
Remove lid.
Allow to cool slightly and enjoy!
