Drinking coffee is quite the norm in our world and our culture and honestly, it’s for good reason!

People all over the country stay up late, wake up early, and are constantly seeking a way to find energy, even in the form of a drink.

And if you’re wanting caffeine, this drink was born to shine!

It’s strong, tasty, and packed full of liquid energy in each and every cup!

Can you make this coffee taste sweet?

You can.

If you want to add some sweetness to this recipe, use sugar, a sugar substitute, or even your favorite coffee creamer as well.

Whatever flavor you like your coffee to be, make it happen!

We’ve made a Black Americano. That’s when you don’t add any steamed milk to the recipe.

What’s the difference between a white Americano and a latte?

We have made a black Americano which means there’s no milk in the recipe.

However, if you would like to add steamed milk, also known as a white Americano, you may do so.

It’s kind of like a latte then, in that it has steamed milk in it.

The difference between a white Americano and a latte is simple – the quantity of steamed milk poured in the drink.

A latte will have more steamed milk where a white Americano will have just a splash of steamed milk.

Ingredients to make Cafe Americano

For the basic Americano recipe, you only need two ingredients:

  • espresso coffee beans
  • hot or almost boiling water

To make the coffee, you will also need: an espresso maker, a sauce pan or electric kettle, a measuring spoon, and a coffee mug.

How to sweeten an Americano

If you would like to sweeten your Americano, I recommend mixing the sweetener into the espresso before you add it to the water.

It helps the sugar or syrup to dissolve since the espresso will be hotter than the water.

Of course, you can add sweetener after you’ve poured the drink, but mixing it in with the espresso gives it just a little extra somethin’ somethin’.

Can I spike my coffee?

Sure!

We enjoy adding a shot of liquor to a great cup of coffee.

Some of our favorites to add are: whiskey, Kahlua, Spiced Rum, tequila, and Vodka.

We also like flavored liquerrs like hazelnut liqueur, creme de cacao, Irish cream, and amaretto.

How to Make Cafe Americano

I like to make an Americano using freshly ground coffee beans.

So I start by measuring the beans and grind them until they are fine.

Then I add the coffee to the espresso maker and press them in.

I use a bit of pressure to make sure that they are really in there well.

You can use the back of a spoon to press it if you’d like.

Then make the espresso according to the type of machine you have.

Then, heat the water.

I like to use an electric kettle to do this since I can more easily control the temperature, but you may use a sauce pan if you’d like.

If you’re measuring the temperature, a candy thermometer works well here.

Next, you’ll measure the coffee and the hot water to a 2 to 1 ratio – 2 parts water to 1 part espresso.

Pour the water into the mug first.

Then pour the espresso on top.

You want to pour the hot water into the mug first. This allows foam, called “crema,” to remain at the top when you add the espresso.
