Enjoy a fun, Hawaiian themed cocktail this holiday season when you make a Christmas Blue Hawaiian!
It’s a fun riff on the classic tropical drink.
Up until this point, the Blue Hawaiian Cocktail has been traditionally known as a tropical drink recipe made with rum, Blue Curaçao, coconut cream, and pineapple juice.
Today, however, I’ve added a twist to this classic cocktail by adding some peppermint to update the cocktail for the winter holidays.
I call it a Christmas Blue Hawaiian!
It not only tastes delicious with the flavors typical to this time of year but it looks so darn festive too, decorated with crushed candy canes!
I like to serve this cocktail on the rocks but you can opt to serve it frozen – either way, it’s going to be a hit!
Enjoy a delicious Christmas Blue Hawaiian Cocktail
In case you are unfamiliar with this Blue Hawaiian Cocktail, it’s named after the beautiful turquoise waters and sandy white beaches of Hawaii. It is also characterized by island flavors such as orange, coconut, and pineapple.
Is a Blue Hawaiian the same drink as a Blue Hawaii?
No, it’s not the same as a Blue Hawaii.
These are, in fact, two different cocktails with similarities.
For example, both are made with rum, pineapple juice, and blue curaçao.
It’s easy to get the two of them mixed up.
However, the two drinks differ in that the Blue Hawaiian contains coconut cream while Blue Hawaii contains sweet and sour mix and sometimes vodka.
I don’t actually use coconut cream for my Christmas version of the Blue Hawaiian.
Instead, I make use of coconut rum – close enough in my books!
Now you get to enjoy this traditionally summer cocktail at Christmas too.
Whether you sip on it during the heat of summer or enjoy this Christmas version during the cooler months, one thing’s for sure.
It’s as good as a vacation in a glass!
Ingredients you need to make a Blue Hawaiian with Peppermint:
- Coconut Rum – we used Malibu
- Blue Curacao
- Peppermint Schnapps
- Pineapple Juice
- Sprite
- Ice
- Crushed Candy Canes, for the glass
- Simple Syrup, for the glass
To make the drink, you will also need: a small plate if you’re adding crushed candy canes to your glass, a measuring cup or jigger, a cocktail shaker, and a beverage glass.
Note: If you’re looking for a traditional Blue Hawaiian, simply omit the peppermint and you have yourself a nice, tropical cocktail.
Can I make the drink without alcohol?
Sure!
What you’ll want to do is omit the coconut rum, Blue Curacao, and peppermint schnapps.
Then, you’ll replace the coconut rum with a drop or two of rum extract and a teaspoon (or to taste) of cream of coconut.
Replace the Blue Curacao with Blue Curacao syrup.
We like the blue curacao syrups from Monin and Torani.
And you can get the peppermint flavor by dissolving a few small pieces of crushed peppermint in the drink.
As an alternative, you can add a couple of drops of peppermint extract if you don’t want to dissolve the candies.
How to make a Christmas Blue Hawaiian with Peppermint
If you wish to decorate the glass, begin by pouring a small amount of simple syrup on a plate. On another plate, crush some candy canes into small pieces.
Turn your beverage glass upside down and first dip, the glass into the simple syrup followed by the crushed peppermint candy. Then set the glass aside while you make the drink.
Fill your cocktail shaker about half way with ice.
Then measure the coconut rum, Blue Curacao, and peppermint schnapps and pour it into a cocktail shaker.
Shake them well until liquors and juice are well-mixed and chilled.
About 15-20 seconds ought to do it.
Fill your beverage glasses with ice.
Pour the mixture over the ice leaving room at the top.
Top the drink off with the Sprite, garnish with a cherry, and enjoy!

What a great twist on the classic drink! I wasn’t sure about the peppermint at first, so I added just a little at a time, but my goodness, it sure does taste good with the orange and pineapple flavors. Winner!
