Layering a drink is fun and this Red and Blue Kool-Aid Punch is really easy to make in layers.

Whether you’re throwing a summer party or just hanging out with friends in the back yard, punch is always a great choice for a summer drink.

But a punch you can make both for the kids or for the adults is even better!

This delicious red and blue Kool-Aid punch makes a fun two-color mocktail your kids are sure to love.

Or add in some spirits and turn it into a fun and flavorful cocktail perfect for your next summer party.

How to Make Red and Blue Kool-Aid Punch

Two red and blue drinks garnished with a cherry surrounded by red white and blue stars
Adding a cherry on top makes this drink so much fun. It’s perfect to serve for the patriotic holidays like Memorial Day and July 4th. It’s even fun to serve for Shark Week!

The key to making this fun drink is layering the ingredients.

And with just two simple ingredients as the base of this drink, it couldn’t be easier to make!

Start by filling your drink glass to the rim with ice to ensure your drink stays nice and cold while you’re drinking it.

Add two tablespoons (one ounce) grenadine to the glass and allow it to flow all the way to the bottom of the cup.

When the grenadine has settled to the bottom of the glass, carefully add the blue punch to the top of the drink.

Add a straw to the cup and garnish with a cherry, then enjoy your refreshing drink on a hot summer day!

And because of it’s gorgeous colors, it’s perfect to serve as a delicious Patriotic Punch for Memorial Day and Fourth of July festivities!

If you’re making these to celebrate, an easy way to up the fun factor is to add a little bit of wire tinsel to your serving table or tray like we did here. It’s festive and pretty, but really easy to do and clean up.

Red and Blue Punch Ingredients:

All you need to make this drink is 2 simple ingredients plus ice.

  • Mixed Berry Kool-Aid
  • Grenadine
  • Maraschino Cherry, for garnish if you’d like

You will also need a pitcher or beverage dispenser for the Kool-Aid and beverage glasses.

We like to serve this drink in a tall glass so that it really shows off the drinks’ layers well. We have used small hurricane glasses.

The beauty of this simple drink is that you can easily customize it to your own tastes!

The only ingredient that must be used is the grenadine.

The thickness of this sweet syrup is the key to getting that beautiful layered effect between the red grenadine and blue punch, which is why you must have this key ingredient!

But swapping out the mixed berry Kool-Aid in my recipe is totally do-able.

There are a variety of other drinks you could use in place of Kool-Aid.

Just be sure your drink is blue to get the patriotic effect!

These other blue drinks would make a great powdered Kool-Aid alternative:

  • Blue Hawaiian Punch
  • Blue Raspberry Kool-Aid
  • Blue Raspberry Daiquiri mix
  • Blue Cream Soda.

Can I spike this Kool-Aid punch mocktail for adults?

This simple mocktail also makes a great cocktail!

You can add these alcohols to the drink to make it an adult-friendly cocktail:

• Blue curacao
• Clear rum
• Vodka
• Flavored vodka or clear rum

When adding alcohol to the punch recipe, mix one-part alcohol per four parts punch.

If you’re making a large batch, you would add eight ounces of alcohol to two pints of punch made with the Kool-Aid packet.

Stir the punch to combine, then pour the drink into the glasses as directed.

If you’re only making one batch of Kool-Aid and want to add booze to some of the drinks, you can!

Simply pour half (or whatever amount you want to reserve for the boozy portions) in another pitcher to keep it separate from the non-alcoholic version.

The important thing is that you pre-mix the alcohol with the Kool-Aid prior to pouring the drink so that you don’t disturb the layering effect.

How to Make Red and Blue Kool-Aid Punch:

First, you will begin by making your Kool-Aid according to the directions on the package.

Depending on what kind you’re using, you may also need some sugar.

Once the Kool-Aid is ready, you’ll want to fill your beverage glasses with ice.

I like to fill the glasses pretty full for this drink because it gives the grenadine something to stick to a little while it’s running down.

That helps with getting the colors to blend a bit.

Two hurricane glasses filled with ice and some grenadine
The grenadine will sink to the bottom of the glass since it’s a syrup. That will make the bottom red layer.

Then you’ll gently pour the Kool-Aid over the ice.

There’s a bartender’s trick to doing this well so the layers are nice and neat.

You always layer from heaviest to lightest so that the layers will float on top of each other.

That’s why the grenadine goes in first.

Here’s the trick – take a spoon and turn it upside down.

Then pour a small trickle of Kool-Aid on the back of the spoon and let it run off the spoon into the glass.

Two hurricane glasses filled with a layered drink with blue on top of red liquids.
The blue Kool-Aid will float on top of the grenadine since it’s lighter. Be careful to resist the urge to stir the drink until it’s time to sip so that you don’t disturb the layers.

After filling the cocktail glass, pop a Maraschino Cherry on top for a pretty little garnish and enjoy!
