When it comes to being a true Harry Potter fanatic, this means that you’re no stranger to the importance of Unicorn Blood throughout the plot of the books and movies.

Enjoy a Unicorn Blood Cocktail

A cocktail next to an orange buffalo plaid cloth with Halloween skull candles.
Since the drink has cherry liqueur, it’s a natural fit to garnish the drink with cherries. We’ve used maraschino cherries here, but if you really want to both up the flavor and the spooky factor, some Luxardo cherries are just right for this drink. They taste delicious and are nice and dark.

Since you’ll only be making up and drinking this “Unicorn Blood Cocktail”, this means that you’ll get the benefit of staying alive and living your best life.

What’s not to like?

Is unicorn blood a cursed drink?

Not our recipe!

But if you know the story of the curses that come with the slaying of a unicorn, then you know that that’s one end of the spectrum that you don’t want to be on.

Thankfully, this recipe for unicorn blood is not one of those cursed drinks.

One sip of this Unicorn Blood Cocktail and you’ll be thankful that you’re on the good side of the drink and not the cursed one!

Luckily, this simple Harry Potter cocktail isn’t hard to whip up at all and it tastes amazing, too.

A glittery cocktail for Halloween

A purple shimmery cocktail next to skulls with an orange and black buffalo plaid napkin.
Voldemort knew how precious Unicorn Blood is. We bet ours tastes better though.

This purple alcoholic drink with glitter is sure to be a win!

Even though the unicorn blood in Harry Potter is thick and silver, it’s still a super fun themed-drink to have on hand for all your friends who are Harry Potter fans, too.

We added edible silver shimmer to give ours that swirl of silvery gray to keep it on theme.

Great for a party for binge-watching Harry Potter or a tasty drink for Halloween as well.

Made using tequila and coconut rum, this fruity and flavorful drink will have you forget about any doom and gloom that might be hanging around in your future.

And since it has a bit of silver glimmer mixed in, there’s that hint of unicorn blood that’ll be staring at you with every single sip.

What else could you use as a garnish for this unicorn blood cocktail?

While I’m a big fan of the mint and cherries, don’t forget that a slice of lime would also make a great garnish, too.

It just really depends on if you want a bit more sour taste or sweet.

You can also dress it up with a fun unicorn cocktail pick.

Or for Halloween, use a spooky skull cocktail pick.

You can really have fun with serving this drink. If you have some fun, themed cocktail picks, like a skull and crossbones or a witch hat, it’s a lot of fun to add to the drink.

Ingredients to make the Harry Potter-inspired Unicorn Blood Cocktail

  • 1.5 oz Coconut Rum, like Malibu
  • .5 oz Silver Tequila
  • .5 oz Cherry cordial liqueur, like Cherry Heering or Luxardo
  • 3 oz Sprite
  • 1 tsp. Silver cake shimmer
  • 1 tsp. Grenadine
  • Maraschino cherries, for garnish
  • Sprig of mint, for garnish

To make the drink, you will need: a measuring cup or jigger, a measuring spoon, a cocktail shaker, and a beverage glass.

Can I make this drink without alcohol?

Sort of.

If you leave out the alcohol, you’re left with sprite, grenadine and the silver cake shimmer.

So basically, that’s going to be a sparkly Shirley Temple.

And if that’s what you’re looking for, that’s great!

But if you’re looking to try to keep the spirit of the drink more intact, we like to mix in some cherry kool-aid or a cherry flavored cream soda.

It gives it a little more flavor and makes a virgin version of the drink a bit more fun.

While we made the drink to enjoy for with your Harry Potter movie and reading marathons, it is rather perfect for Halloween. Spooky Halloween themed drinks are so much fun.

How to make a Harry Potter unicorn blood cocktail

Making the drink is really easy.

Start by filling your cocktail shaker about three quarters of the way full with ice.

Also fill your beverage glass with ice too.

Then measure the rum, tequila, grenadine, and cherry liqueur and pour them over the ice in the shaker.

You want to measure the liquids before adding them to the ice so that the ice doesn’t melt.

If you have a Boston shaker, I like to add ice to one part and the liquids to the other and then put it together and shake.

Measure the silver cake shimmer and add it to the shaker as well.

Shake thoroughly.

Because of the cake shimmer, you want to make sure that it’s well mixed so that the shimmer will really sparkle when the drink is poured.

Strain over the ice in your beverage glass.

Top with Sprite or your favorite lemon-lime soda.

Ginger ale works too.

Garnish with a sprig of mint and a couple of maraschino or Luxardo cherries. And enjoy.

Since this drink is shimmery, we think it really shows off well to serve it with a crushed ice dome. To do so, overfill your glass and round the ice before pouring the drink.

Made with cherry liqueur, tequila, and coconut rum, it's absolutely delicious. We can see why Voldemort wanted it so much.

I have to confess that I have never watched a Harry Potter movie, but I am loving how magical this cocktail is! 😉

  2. Hi there! This sounds delicious and, of course, looks beautiful. When do you incorporate the 3 ounces of Sprite? I read through the post and recipe directions, but didn’t see where the Sprite became a part of the mix. I know we wouldn’t want to shake it, would you just stir it in at the end? Pour it in the glass with the ice first? Maybe I just missed it entirely lol!

    1. Hi Heather,

Thanks so much for your question. Good catch! I think I read it so much I didn’t notice I left out that little detail. Yes, you add the Sprite at the end and stir it in. You don’t want to shake anything with carbonation. It makes a big ol’ mess. lol Thanks again. I’ve made the correction above.
