Enjoy making a pitcher of watermelon mint margaritas in a pitcher – or in a watermelon!

One of my favorite ways to serve a fruity cocktail is to use the fruit itself as its shot glass.

And watermelon makes it so easy.

Most watermelons have such a generous amount of flesh, that there’s plenty to go around.

And these watermelon mint margaritas are so easy to make, you’ll want to make quite a few of them.

Watermelon Mint Margaritas are perfect for summer

When watermelons are in season, it’s only natural to want to dig into them as often as you can.

They truly are the perfect summertime fruit.

And having a bit of creative fun with your watermelon is ideal for parties and get togethers with family and friends.

If you’re having guests for Memorial Day, Father’s Day or the Fourth of July, these are the perfect thing to serve.

And if you have some watermelon left over, be sure to try making a yummy side dish like a watermelon feta salad.

Serving watermelon margaritas in a carved watermelon are sure to be a hit at your summer get togethers.

Tools you need to make a watermelon mint margarita:

You don’t need a lot of fancy equipment to make watermelon mint margaritas.

In fact, all you need are your ingredients, an ice cream scoop, a knife, and a melon baller.

You will need a good knife to carve off the top of your watermelon.

I like using an actual watermelon knife that’s especially for this purpose.

It’s extra long, so even if you’re working with a large watermelon, you should still be able to make a single slice to remove the top.

And that’s so much nicer than chopping all the way around it with a smaller blade.

It really helps me to cut out the pink flesh to leave the white part of the watermelon behind.

I really like an ice cream scoop that you can warm up to help your scooping go easier.

I start scooping with the ice cream scoop.

And then once I have removed most of the flesh, I do the finer work with a melon baller.

blankWhen it comes to  scraping out the melon where you need to do a bit of detail work, I like to use a scoop with a trigger that will easily release the melon.

You can find sets with three different sizes, and it’s great not only for working with melon, but they are versatile kitchen tools that are handy for many types of recipes.

blankIngredients:

A pitcher of watermelon mint margaritas, bottles of tequila and triple sec on a red white and blue plaid tablecloth.

Makes 4 drinks:

  • 2 Cups fresh Watermelon
  • 1/2 Cup Tequila
  • 2 oz. of Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 2 cups Ice
  • 4 sprigs of fresh mint, divided

How to hollow out a watermelon for your drink:

First, we begin by preparing the watermelon.

With your knife, make a slice on the bottom to make a  flat surface so the watermelon can stand upright for your drink. If your watermelon is flat on one side, you may be able to skip this step.

Then make a slice on the opposite side to remove the top.

With your knife, make vertical slices in the shape of a plus sign and then all around the edges.

You want to get as close to the white part of the watermelon as possible.

Using your ice cream scoop, scoop out as much watermelon as you can leaving the white part of the watermelon behind.

Put the melon in a bowl.

Using your scoop, carefully remove additional watermelon from the rind.

You want to leave the rind so that you can see the white part of the melon.

Note: when you are scooping out the melon, be sure to leave enough rind so that the rind will not leak when filled with the drink.

Make it a Mocktail!

To enjoy a non-alcoholic version of our Watermelon Mint Margaritas, simply omit the tequila and triple sec.

You’ll need to replace their parts with another beverage, and a great substitute is lemon-lime soda.

After hollowing out your melon, place your watermelon, tequila, triple sec, ice, and the leaves from 2 mint sprigs into your blender.

Pulse until blended.

Pour into your watermelon rind and / or a pitcher.

Garnish with fresh mint.

Serving note: This drink serves four typical size margarita glasses. If you are serving it in the watermelon rind,  you may need a pitcher to hold the excess. Serving it in the watermelon rind is ideally served with multiple straws as a drink to be shared by two people.
