Frozen Strawberry Basil Margarita
Is there ever too much of a good thing?
Especially when it’s a yummy frozen margarita?
This recipe is so good that you may find yourself with requests to make it by the pitcher.
If you do, just double or triple the recipe depending on the size of your pitcher.
Frozen Strawberry Basil Margaritas are terrific to make by the pitcher for your summertime get togethers.

- 1/3 cup triple sec

Make a strawberry basil margarita mocktail
The great thing about making a virgin frozen strawberry basil margarita is that what you’re left with is a smoothie or a slushie!
There are a couple of ways you can make this drink without alcohol.
To make it a mocktail, you’ll want to leave out the triple sec and tequila.
But you’ll need some other liquid to give it some flow.
To make it a slushie, you’ll add some ice and some more liquid.
I like using some ginger ale or lemon lime soda.
But if you want to make it a smoothie, I like to use just a little bit of coconut milk.
It thickens it just a bit and the extra coconut flavor gives it a bit of pop.
Variations on the recipe
You can really have a lot of fun with this recipe.
For example, if you don’t care for basil, you can leave it out and simply enjoy a strawberry margarita.
If you like spice, you can always add a chili powder or Tajin rim to the drink like we’ve done on our Chili Mango Margaritas.
Another way to enjoy a spicy strawberry basil margarita is to kick up the spice a bit by throwing a few slices of jalapeno into the blender too.
And of course, we’ve already mentioned that you can use sugar or salt on the glass depending on if you like your drink a bit sweeter or more savory.
Now, if you don’t want to use tequila, you can substitute rum and make it a strawberry daiquiri.
Can I use a berry other than strawberries in the recipe?
You sure can!
There’s no reason why you can’t substitute frozen raspberries, blackberries, or blueberries.
Or even a mixture to make a mixed berry margarita!
They will all make an awesome margarita.
You’ll need to add a little more fruit to the blender to make these since the fruit is a lot smaller.
About a quarter to a third cup should do it.
A note about blackberries and seeds…
Blackberry seeds are rather hard, and sometimes in a blended drink, you can find them despite your best efforts.
Now, if you don’t like seeds in your drink, you may want to take an extra step and strain the berries before blending them with all of the other ingredients.
In this case, start by blending the berries first on their own.
Then pour the blended berries through a strainer to remove as many of the seeds as you can.
Then add the blended berries back to the blender, add the rest of the ingredients to blend, and make the drink.
What kind of tequila is best for strawberry margaritas?
I like to use a blanco tequila, which is the same thing as silver tequila, in a margarita.
It’s nice and clear so your drink really looks like a strawberry.
More importantly, the tequila is unaged.
You can really taste the agave notes too, so that especially works well in not only a strawberry margarita, but any fruity margarita recipe.
However, we prefer gold tequila in traditional margaritas.
Why not try them both and see which one you like better?
How to make a strawberry basil margarita pitcher
This recipe makes a great pitcher drink.
The recipe as is makes 2 to 3 drinks depending on the size of your margarita glass.
So that may fill a small pitcher.
Depending on the size of your pitcher and blender capacity, you can double or triple the recipe to serve several drinks at once.
And of course, if you’re serving multiples glasses at once, you can always have someone at the blender while you’re serving.
How to make frozen strawberry margaritas with basil
This blender drink is really easy to make.
If you like sugar or salt on your margarita glass, I recommend doing that step before pouring the drink.
To prepare the glass, put some sugar or salt on a small plate.
Run a lime wedge around the edge of the glass, turn the glass upside down, and dip it in the sugar or salt.
Now let’s make the margarita.
What you want to do is start out by filling your blender with 2 basil leaves and the frozen strawberries.
Then add the tequila and triple sec.
Blend it until it’s nice and smooth.
To add a garnish, add a couple of strawberries and some fresh basil leaves.
If you’ve blended the drink until it’s nice and thick, they will float on top of the drink.
If you made the drink with more liquid, you can always cut a small slice in the strawberry and perch it on the edge of the glass with a sprig of basil.
How many calories in a frozen strawberry margarita?
By using actual strawberries as one of our main ingredients and only a bit of sugar, we’ve kept the calories in our strawberry basil margarita recipe down to 235.
A lot of strawberry margaritas are made with a mixer, and the processed sugar can really contribute to the calories.
If you would like to reduce the calories further, you may cut the amount of sugar to taste or use your favorite artificial sweetener.
