These delightful Midnight Margaritas are inspired by one of our all-time favorite Halloween movies, Practical Magic.
Conjure up a little spooky fun, grab your vacuum, put the lime in the coconut, and whip up some of these yummy margs for some good ol’ spell casting fun.
Witches need their Halloween margaritas…
After all, there’s a little witch in all of us.
Midnight Margaritas, a recipe inspired by Practical Magic
Halloween is all about the grotesque costumes and decorations.
And the excitement and sugar-rush of all the candy and treats dished out to little trick or treaters or served at fun parties.
And don’t forget about the build-up of all the gruesome, blood curdling thrillers and supernatural movies on show (both old and new)!
One such movie that comes to mind for me in particular (and is one of my absolute favorite Halloween movies without a doubt) is Practical Magic.
It’s part romantic comedy, part supernatural, and undeniably all-in chick-flick.
This golden oldie sets the tone and inspiration perfectly for my Practical Magic Midnight Margaritas which I can’t wait to share with you as Halloween fast approaches!!
A Practical Magic inspired Halloween cocktail
Although there are many fun foodie moments scattered throughout this flick, I’ve chosen the Practical Magic drinking scene in which the aunts are in the kitchen brewing something intriguing.
And of course the song that’s playing in the background…
You know the song…
You put the lime in the coconut…
I suddenly thought…Midnight Margaritas!
Woo Woo!
So I started with the aunts’ Midnight Margaritas “recipe,” or ahem, spell…
Eye of Newt, toe of frog. Wing of bat, tongue of dog. Adder’s fork, and blind worm’s sting. Barbados lime is just the thing. Fragga’s salt like a sailor’s stubble. Flip the switch and let the cauldron bubble!
Or at least let the cocktail shaker blend it up, right?
A fun Halloween margarita recipe
Instead of traditional margaritas that it looked like the aunts were drinking, I decided on adding a twist.
I included Midori Melon Liqueur, blue curacao, and Sweet n Sour Mix which gives it a Halloween-inspired deep lime-green color for added spookiness!
The Midori kind of stands in for the toe of frog.
After all, Halloween is the perfect time for a Midori margarita!
And of course, the sweet and sour mix stands in for the Barbados lime.
You can also use limeade if you don’t have any sweet and sour.
Naturally, I couldn’t resist adding some silver cake shimmer dust for extra effects!
It’s always fun to add a little sparkle, and it’s like adding a little magic dust!
This recipe is very easy and quick to make, giving you more time to relax and enjoy the Halloween festivities.
Simply add all of the ingredients into your shaker, shaking well and enjoy these Practical Magic Midnight Margaritas whatever time of night (or day) you choose!
Ingredients you need to make Midnight Margaritas
This Midori margarita recipe makes two drinks.
It’s quick and to make and easy to multiply if you’re serving several at once.
- 1½ oz. Tequila
- ½ oz. Midori Melon Liqueur
- ½ oz. Blue Curacao
- 3 oz. Sweet n Sour Mix
- 3 oz. Lemon-Lime Soda
- 1 tsp. Silver cake shimmer dust, optional
To make the drink, you’ll need a cocktail shaker, measuring cup or jigger, a measuring spoon, and of course, some fun cocktail glasses.
Can I make the drink without alcohol?
This one is a little tough since the majority of the ingredients have alcohol in them.
If you simply omit the blue curacao, tequila, and Midori, you’re left with a lemon-lime soda with some shimmer and a cherry.
So if you want to keep the spirit of the drink without the spirits, you can always mix up some lemon-lime Kool Aid to get the sour flavor.
Then add a splash honey dew melon and blue curacao syrup to add a touch of sweetness.
Then top it off with some Sprite or 7-Up for some fizz.
When you add the syrups, less is more.
I like to start with half a teaspoon of each, take a small taste, and go from there.
It’s easy to over do it with the syrup, so you can always add more if you need to.
It’s not a dupe for the Midori margaritas since you won’t have that honeydew melon flavor coming from the Midori.
However, the syrups add a touch of flavor that’s fun for the kids or anyone at your event who wants a non-alcoholic option.
Can I use this recipe to make a frozen Midori margarita?
Yes! You certainly can make frozen margaritas using this recipe.
And they are yummy!
First of all, you need to ask yourself if you want to put carbonated beverages in your blender.
If you don’t want to, you don’t have to. What I like to do is use the soda to make ice cubes!
I like to start by making ice cubes with the lemon-lime soda.
So freeze your Sprite or 7-Up into cubes.
Once frozen, add them to the blender.
Then pour the tequila, Midori, and Blue Curacao into the blender.
Add a little bit of lemon-lime soda.
Close and pulse until you reach the desired consistency.
Pour into a margarita glass and sprinkle a little cake shimmer on top.
What other times can I serve Midnight Margaritas?
Well, frankly, you can serve a drink that you enjoy whenever your heart desires to serve it.
But if you’re looking for ideas for occasions, we like to make this drink for St. Patrick’s Day and for Christmas too!
Just give them a different name, and you’re good to go.
Serving this Midoria Margarita looks just perfect for St. Patrick’s Day.
It’s green and shimmery.
You can add to the fun by adding some gold sanding sugar to the glass if you want to make it a little more festive.
And for Christmas, this drink looks perfectly Grinchy!
How to make midnight margaritas
It really couldn’t be easier to make these yummy drinks.
Put some ice in your cocktail shaker.
You want it to be at least halfway full.
Then add the tequila, Midori melon liqueur, the Blue Curacao liqueur, and the sweet and sour mix.
Now, shake it on up! LOL – couldn’t resist.
Fill two cocktail glasses with ice.
Pour half of the mixture in each glass.
Top each glass off with your favorite lemon-lime soda.
Optional but fun!
Stir in a bit of silver cake shimmer.
Garnish the drinks with a maraschino or Luxardo cherry or two and enjoy!
