If you’ve ever wished that you could live in the wizarding world, our recipe for Homemade Harry Potter Butterbeer Float will get you one step closer.

It is also magically easy to make!

Harry Potter Butterbeer Float

A mug filled with butterbeer with a red and white straw on a Gryffindor themed placemat.
Whenever you or your Harry Potter fan curls up with one of the books or movies, it’s always nice to sip on a delicious Butterbeer Float. This one is really easy to make and it really hits the spot.

Start by adding caramel syrup to your glass.

Add cream soda and ice cream and then top it all off with more caramel syrup and whipped cream.

If you’d like it extra buttery, I’ve got you covered there, as well.

This float has no booze in it, but the flavor is intoxicating, all the same.

It will have you granting 50 points to Gryffindor in no time!

When to serve butterbeer floats

If you ask a big Harry Potter fan, it’s always a good time for butterbeer.

But it’s especially good to enjoy a cold mug when it’s time to curl up to read one of the books.

(For the ___th time… We know. We do it too.)

Or if you’re watching one of your favorite Potter movies or having a movie marathon.

But it’s especially nice to serve when you’re introducing your child to Harry Potter for the very first time.

That’s a special moment, and overwhelming the senses with the story as well as the smells and tastes is just wonderful.

But this drink is just so darn good that even muggles like it too.

In fact, if you don’t tell them it’s butterbeer, you can serve it anytime.

Heck, I’ve even gotten away with serving it for tailgating.

Believe it or not.

Harry Potter Butterbeer float is a fun treat to serve to guests on Game Day.

Granted, there is no flying on broomsticks, but still, the Big Game is often as exciting as a Quidditch match.

Almost, right?

As your guests lose themselves in the pleasure of their delicious Harry Potter Float, they may even forget that they have a favorite team and just sit back and enjoy the game.

Okay, probably not.

There’s no magic strong enough to make that happen!

Ingredients to make a Butterbeer Ice Cream Float:

Butterbeer float ingredients

  • 1 cup cream soda
  • 2 tablespoons caramel simple syrup
  • 2 tablespoon caramel syrup
  • 2 scoops vanilla bean ice cream
  • Whipped topping
  • Optional: 1 tbsp butter (if making your own whipped topping, add butter for extra flavor)

Can I spike my float?

Don’t tell Professor Dumbledore, but yes, you can!

Adults can enjoy a 21+ butterbeer float by adding an ounce of butterscotch schnapps to the drink.

I like to add the schnapps to the glass at the same time as the cream soda.

Then give it a gentle stir and continue with the remaining steps in the recipe.

How to make a Butterbeer Float:

Add simple syrup to the glass. Drizzle caramel along the sides.

Pour in cream soda to half the glass and add ice cream scoops of vanilla.

Process shot: Fill the glass with the cream soda.

Top off your ice cream float with whipped topping and caramel syrup.

About that extra buttery flavor…

For extra butter flavor it’s optional to use a 1/2 tablespoon of butter melted into the drink.

Or if your making your own whipped topping you can add the butter to it for more flavor.

Some people add buttered flavored simple syrup as well.

My kid is a big Harry Potter fan, so we had some of these and watched one of the movies last weekend. It was really easy to make. I’ll do this again for the next movie!

My kids will flip when I make this for them. We went to Universal Studios last spring and hit the Harry Potter area… we had Butterbeer for the first time and all four of us fell in love with it! Thanks
