Sorting hat shots

Five glass bottles filled with colored liquid in front of a witch hat with a feathered brim.
Whip up some fun sorting hat shots to show off your Hogwarts’ House pride! You can make some extra flavors too if you’d like.

Today we transport ourselves to the depths of Hogwarts dungeons, mixing potions inspired by the Sorting Hat from the Harry Potter series!

These shots are so cute, and it’s so easy to whip up a variety so that you have shots to represent each house at Hogwarts.

And I don’t know about you but with everything that’s been happening around the world this year, I think we all need a stiffer drink than usual as we start to wind down and celebrate the holidays ahead.

Let the sorting hat help match you with your favorite shot!

“Not Slytherin, eh?…Are you sure? You could be great, you know, it’s all here in your head, and Slytherin will help you on the way to greatness, no doubt about that no?

Well, if you’re sure…better be… GRYFFINDOR!” — The Sorting Hat

Whether there’s real sorcery involved or not, the Sorting Hat knows how to get your next “house” party off to a great start!

These shots have such fun, vibey colors, punchy flavors and the liquor of your choice (whether that be vodka or light rum)!

Whether you’re drinking something green for Slytherin…

A yellow one for Hufflepuff…

Or if you’re throwing back a red one in Gryffindor’s common room, you’re sure to find a tasty combination to delight your taste buds.

With a sharp mix of hard liquors balanced with the sweet flavors of Kool-Aid and Juice – it only takes a little bit of magic to mix up these fun party shots and even less effort to drink up!

These shots look great in any spare glass bottles you may have lying around the house.

And the shots are great to served not only for a Harry Potter themed party but of course for spooky Halloween!

Set them up with some themed decor and you’re all set.

Making Hogwarts house shots

While you don’t have to make a ton of varieties, it is fun to make one for each house.

And of course, we threw in some orange for Halloween too!

While this recipe makes a lot if you use all of the Kool-Aid, you can always mix a smaller quantity of shots and keep the excess Kool-Aid / mixer / juice set aside if you need to make more during your event.

We’ve deliberately kept this super easy so that you can mix these up super-duper fast.

We’ve made some extra flavors, but you definitely want to serve a red shot for Gryffindor, a green one to represent Slyterin, a yellow one for our friends in Hufflepuff, and of course, blue for Ravenclaw.

Did the sorting hat place you in Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw? Let everyone know with your fun Hogwarts’ House shot.

Ingredients to make the sorting hat’s shots

Makes: Each flavor variety makes 8 servings.

  • 8 ounces Green Kool-aid, or your favorite green mixer
  • 8 ounces Strawberry Kool-Aid, or your favorite strawberry mixer
  • 8 ounces Orange Kool-Aid, or Orange Soda
  • 8 ounces Lemonade or Pineapple Juice
  • 8 ounces Cherry Kool-Aid or Cranberry Juice
  • 8 ounces Blue Berry Burst Kool-Aid, or your favorite blueberry juice or mixer
  • 40 ounces of your favorite clear liquor such as vodka or light rum

Equipment you will need to make the potion shots

To make the shots, you will need a pitcher or large glass, a spoon, a small funnel or dropper, and small “potion” bottles.

Can I serve the sorting hat’s shots without alcohol?

Sure!

Just use the Kool-Aid or a juice and enjoy!

If you are serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic shots, you may wish to keep them separated.

Using different ice buckets or by designated a specific bottle shape or flavor for the non-alcoholic ones can help keep them organized.

How to make sorting hat shots

You won’t believe how easy it is to make these shots.

First, you will want to gather your ingredients and equipment.

Then, in a pitcher or large glass, mix the Kool-Aid according to the instructions on the package.

You’ll want to do this for each flavor you’re serving.

In a mixing glass, combine 8 ounces of Kool-Aid with 4 ounces of vodka or rum.

Stir the mixture well.

Tip: If you’re pouring shots in potion glasses, using a small funnel or a dropper may make the pouring easier as the mouth to the bottles may be narrow.

If you’re using shot glasses, you should be able to pour from the mixing glass.

Put the stopper in the potion bottles and refrigerate them until it’s time to serve.

Repeat for each flavor.

Serving tips and ideas

These are great to make ahead of time.

Just keep them chilled in the refrigerator in small pitchers and pour right before it’s time to serve.

If you are making the shots ahead of time, we do not recommend using any fizzy mixers so that they do not go flat.

If you are serving the Harry Potter House shots in individual potion bottles, they are great to serve chilled in a large ice bucket.

To add to the fun, you can always fill a cauldron shaped Halloween bucket to use for the ice bucket.

Just put the shots in there.

Then you can pretend you’re in Professor Snape’s potion class!

If you don’t want to make a pitcher of Kool-Aid per flavor, you can try using Kool-Aid liquid drops to make only the amount you need for this recipe.

Of course, you may substitute your favorite Kool-Aid flavors if you prefer others from what we have suggested.

You may also use sugar-free Kool-Aid too if you want to keep the calories down.

Depending on whether or not you are using the type of Kool-Aid that you add sugar to, you may need to add sugar.

However, it’s okay to use the pre-sweetened packets or drops too.

Notes

  1. Please note that nutrition facts are subject to change based on your choice of ingredients. The calories are calculated using Kool-Aid. If you use a juice or other mixer, you'll need to adjust.
  2. We have included more flavor options than there are houses at Hogwarts in case you want to mix the flavors up. You can always switch the flavors around to your liking.
  3. If you don't have potion bottles, you can serve these in a test tube for a fun mad scientist theme, in small tea cups for an Alice in Wonderland theme, or in shot glasses.

These are seriously the easiest party shots ever! I picked up some bottles at Michael’s, and had some Kool-Aid on hand. Perfect for our movie night last night.
