How to Host a Harry Potter Party

In our family, we have a tradition of holding a Harry Potter themed party when you turn eleven.

Be sure to check out our collection of Harry Potter birthday party ideas for eleven year olds.

You’ll find all kinds of great ideas to help you host a Harry Potter party that’s fun for kids and adults too!

Harry Potter Activities for All Ages

I look for three elements for my Harry Potter themed parties: fun crafts, great food, and delightful games.

This post pulls together my favorites from all three categories!

Harry Potter Crafts

A girl holding a wand with text: Harry Potter party crafts.

Decorating wands is a huge hit with groups of party goers who are old enough to handle a glue gun.

Follow my step by step instructions on how to make a DIY Harry Potter wand.

Just be aware that the wands take some time to dry, so you’ll need to deliver them or have them picked up later.

It’s also a great craft to make BEFORE the party.

Party goers can select their favorite want to bring home at the end.

This Harry Potter Monster Book of Monsters craft is engaging for younger as well as older party attendees.

The supplies are simple, making it a great classroom or library activity, too. Unlike the wands, this project comes together quickly and doesn’t need a lot of drying time.

Harry Potter parties offer fantastic opportunities to create group crafts, like this adorable Hogwarts Express train.

I love that this craft scales up or down in complexity depending on the skill level of the people who are helping to create it.

Or, take your crafting down to a miniature scale with these delightful DIY Harry Potter potions notebooks!

This is definitely a craft to make ahead or make with people who love crafting and have some skill.

Harry Potter Party Food

J.K. Rowling writes masterful food descriptions.

Every time I read about a wizarding feast I wish I were there!

This means that you can’t have a proper Harry Potter party without some amazing food!

For your party, try coming up with your own recipes that go along with some of the feast foods you find in the book.

Here’s a recipe for Harry Potter inspired pumpkin juice  and a Fantastic Beasts inspired Occamy drink to get you started!

Try making up some of your own, as well, like these Harry Potter pumpkin butterbeer cookies

Dry ice ice cream comes together so quickly that it feels like magic!

For a really easy and healthy snack, try making these Witch Hat Shaped Frozen Pumpkin Yogurt Bites; they are great to make a few hours ahead of time.

Harry Potter Party Games For Kids

Try setting up your own Diagon Alley where you can assemble your own party crafts, taste Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, and find your own perfect wand.

Kitchen Counter Chronicle has a fantastic printable Harry Potter edition of Would You Rather.

I’m always amazed at the fun that is had when you print out  simple Harry Potter book of spells for kids to enjoy.

I do recommend setting some ground rules and thinking through which spells you want kids to be using.

Send Your Guests Home with Souvenirs

The crafts I’ve listed here all make wonderful DIY souvenirs!

Not the crafty type? Try an adorable party favor like these Harry Potter birthday owls with thank you notes!

I hope these activities have given you some fantastic Harry Potter party inspiration!

Remember, the number one ingredient for a successful party is enthusiasm!

Have you ever held a Harry Potter themed party? What favorite activities would you add to this list?
