How to make Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Pretzel Rods
Before you get started it’s important to think about how to work with candy melts, especially if this is your first time or if the kids are helping out.
Let’s go over some of the basics.
How to melt the candy melts
Melt the candy coating according to package directions giving special care not to overheat the candy.
If the candy coating is overheated, it will be too thick.
You can add 2 teaspoons of vegetable shortening or coconut oil to help thin the candy but do not add any other type of liquid as the candy will seize and harden.
How to coat the pretzel rods with candy
Pour candy coating over two-thirds of the pretzel rod and shake gently to remove excess.
If applying sprinkles, do so immediately rotating the pretzel rods to coat all sides.
Larger sprinkles work best if placed individually.
Place pretzel rod on waxed paper or cooling rack.
We really like using the waxed paper because it makes it so much easier to remove the candy coated pretzel rods from the paper than the cooling rack.
How to layer colors of candy melt
If dipping with additional colored candy melts, allow initial candy coating to set completely.
If you’re dipping another color, go ahead and dip it again leaving as much of the initial color exposed as you desire.
You can also drizzle other colors too!
What you want to do is use a spoon or fork to drizzle designs with your candy coating over the pretzel rods.
Before the pretzel sets, gently pick it up and move it to clean wax paper.
If you’re using sprinkles, be sure to sprinkle them on in your desired pattern before the candy dries.
Let pretzel rods dry completely before packaging or serving.
How to Decorate the American Flag Pretzel Rods
Now that you have the hang of how to dip and drizzle the pretzel rods in the candy melt, let’s move on to how to decorate a pretzel rod in a design inspired by the American Flag.
Here’s what you do.
First, melt the white candy coating as instructed above.
Pour candy coating over two-thirds of the pretzel rod and shake gently to remove excess.
Place on waxed paper to dry completely.
Melt the blue candy coating and dip the end of the white-coated pretzel into the melted candy.
Immediately place star sprinkles while the candy is wet using sterilized tweezers and/or a toothpick.
Place on waxed paper right away.
Melt the red candy coating and transfer to a piping bag or freezer bag with the corner snipped.
You want the corner cut to be small so that you can pipe a fine line.
As an alternative, you can also use a piping tip that you would use for writing on a cake.
Drag lines of red across the white field on the pretzels.
Let pretzel rods dry completely before packaging or serving.
How to Decorate Solid Color Pretzel Rods
This one is really easy.
Simply follow steps 1-2 for the basic instructions, and then stop.
Be sure to use blue candy melts with blue sprinkles, etc.
How to Decorate Striped, or French Flag, Pretzel Rods
If you are making striped pretzel rods to look like bunting or the French Flag, start with white candy melts and then roll in sprinkles in the design you want.
I like to pour the sprinkles in the design on a plate or waxed paper so that I only have to roll the pretzels one time.
How to store candy coated pretzel rods
Have you ever bitten into a stale pretzel. It’s kind of icky.
No one likes pretzels that taste stale or those that have lost their crunch.
So it’s important to store them correctly.
What you want to do is use an air tight container.
Then store it at room temperature.
Placing in the refrigerator may cause the pretzels to soften.
Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Pretzel Rods are the perfect summer time treat.
Perfect to serve for your Memorial Day, Flag Day, and Fourth of July gatherings, they combine the perfect sweet and salty taste with some patriotic flair.
