The Devil’s Spiced Wine

One drink that I’ve been dying to drink this Halloween season is this Devil’s Spiced Wine.

Give me Halloween any day as an excuse to whip up some new and exciting cocktails that the adults can enjoy during the spooky festivities!

In fact, I can also imagine this being a drink that someone who loves the show Lucifer would enjoy drinking too!

The Devil’s Spiced Wine

This particular cocktail is strikingly reminiscent of a Dark and Stormy mixed with red wine with a touch of vanilla and cinnamon.

In fact, it has all the making of a typical Dark and Stormy: Dark rum, ginger beer, and a simple syrup.

So where’s the twist?

Well, it’s all in the red wine and the cinnamon!

Perfect for Halloween or for Lucifer viewing parties, this red wine cocktail is a lot like a Dark and Stormy.

In fact, if you love adding a splash of red wine to a cocktail, you’ll also love our Penitent Punch recipe.

It not only tastes great, it goes really well with the theme.

If you would like to serve the two drinks as companion signature cocktails for the holidays or if you’re catching on up watching Lucifer, these two cocktails make a great pairing.

I’m always happy to create new wine cocktails to add to special occasions and celebrations but good ones seem to be few in number.

After all, red wine can be a tricky ingredient to add to a well-balanced drink.

This recipe, however, has all the right combinations of boozy ingredients that results in a ruby-red jewel of a drink.

It’s dominated by warm cinnamon rum flavors, a touch of vanilla and a hint of wine (assisted by using any full-bodied, fruity red wine).

While this recipe includes the option of silver shimmer cake dust to add a little more flare, you can also finish it off by garnishing with cherries!

A drink inspired by the tv show, Lucifer

If you’re a fan of the show Lucifer, you’ll love this drink.

It’s especially naughty, and I can easily see Maze or The Detective sipping on this drink at the Lux after a day of fighting crime.

After all, things get pretty dark and stormy (couldn’t resist) on that show, and of course, there’s a lot of action in the bar at the Lux, so the show is a perfect inspiration for this fun, cinnamon spiced wine.

And of course, you can serve it anytime you like.

You can always just call it “cinnamon spiced wine” if you aren’t serving it to watch the show or for Halloween.

A twist on the classic Dark and Stormy cocktail, the Devil’s Spiced wine is a fun cinnamon spiced wine cocktail.

Ingredients to make the spiced wine cocktail

At only 175 calories, this low-calorie drink is a great way to keep your cocktail calories down.

You’ll need:

  • Red Wine – we used Beaujolais, but you may use your favorite red, fruity wine
  • Spiced Cinnamon Rum – we used Devil’s Reef Cinnamon Rum
  • Vanilla Simple Syrup
  • Ginger Beer – we used Gosling’s Ginger Beer
  • Maraschino or Luxardo cherries, for garnish
  • Optional: Silver shimmer cake dust, for sparkle

To make the drink, you will need: a mixing glass, a measuring cup or jigger, a measuring spoon, a bar spoon, and beverage glasses.

Note: If you don’t have cinnamon rum, you may substitute it with spiced rum like Captain Morgan’s or your other favorite spiced rum.

You may also use a dark rum and add some cinnamon.

Another alternative if you don’t have any rum is to use Fireball Whiskey if that’s what you have on hand.

It will change the drink’s flavor profile a little bit, but it’s still quite a nice drink to sip.

Can I make the drink without alcohol?

Yes, you can enjoy some Devil’s spiced and sparkling grape juice!

Replace the red wine with a sparkling red grape juice.

In place of the cinnamon rum, you can either add a teaspoon of cinnamon simple syrup or add a cinnamon stick to the drink.

You will want to make up the volume for the lost rum with the sparkling wine, so the flavor palette will be a bit more grape forward than the cocktail version.

But don’t be afraid to add some other seasonal spices.

It’s nice to add a touch of allspice or even a star anise pod and some cloves too if you’d like.

If you have a non-alcoholic Falernum on hand, it tastes really good to mix in half a teaspoon, or to taste.

How to make the Devil’s spiced wine

This drink is stirred rather than shaken.

You’ll start by measuring and combining the wine, rum, and simple syrup in a mixing glass.

Gently stir the ingredients until they are well-combined.

If you want to use the silver cake shimmer to give it a bit of sparkle, gently stir it into the mixture so that it has a nice swirl.

Fill your cocktail glasses with ice, and pour the mixture over the ice.

You’ll leave room at the top to top off with the ginger.

Top the drink with the ginger beer and then gently stir the drink again.

If you’d like to garnish the drink, we like to add a few cocktail cherries.

We like using both maraschino and Luxardo cherries in this recipe.

Of course, the maraschino cherries are bright red which looks great with the drink.

But if you want a bit more flavor and like to make it a bit spookier looking, the Luxardo cherries are nice and dark, almost black.
